In light of recent events we think it’s important to revisit the idea of having an emergency preparedness kit in your home. A kit can be every useful in any sort of natural disaster and they are easy and relatively cheap to put together. Do yourself and your family a favor and think ahead. We’ve tried our best to make it easy for you by narrowing the kit building process down to a few simple steps!
Step #1 Get a backpack to pack all of these items. A backpack is the best option as it is easy to carry, easy to grab on your way out and keeps your hands free.
Step #2 Pack the necessities first. Bottled water and non perishable food.
Step #3 The next necessity is shelter. A tent may be too much to carry around so the next best thing is to keep yourself warm. Try to pack a waterproof jacket, sweater, sleeping bag and matches. Insure the matches are kept in a water proof case.
Step #4 In case of a natural disaster, fleeing from home could be dangerous and lead to injuries. Pack medications and a small first aid kit as well as a flashlight to avoid unnecessary injuries by improving visibility.
Step #5 You’ll need to stay informed on the state of emergency. Pack a small AM/FM radio and batteries. A phone charger is optional but may come in handy if your remember to grab your phone. Wind up radios are best as they do not require batteries. Make sure to also pack a map to find your way around.
Other things to consider:
- If you wear glasses, a spare pair or contacts might come in handy.
- A whistle is a good way to let other know you are around in case you get stuck and are immobile.
- Keep a pair of running shoes close to your kit – best foot wear for comfort and mobility.
- Insulin, Epi-pen or prescription medications.
- Pet food and leash if you have a dog or cat.
- Baby food and supplies
It is important to keep your kit in an easy to reach place – ideally by the most accessible exit in your home. Additionally, you’ll want to update and check your kit often to remove dated or expired items or new necessities. We recommend checking in on your kit once every season. Stay safe and be prepared!
